GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The OR Coordinator is a registered nurse with a minimum of 3-5 years OR experience and maintains CPR, ACLS and PALS certifications. This individual is responsible for ensuring that quality patient care is delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner. This includes the responsibility for ensuring that the Center’s Operating Room/PACU (in the absence of the Pre-Op PACU Supervisor) activities comply with necessary legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. This individual also possesses the ability to assess data reflective of a patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to meet the patient’s requirement as well as being able to maintain calmness in a crisis situation and direct staff members appropriately. This individual promotes customer service and patient satisfaction. The OR Coordinator provides clinical management to the department through organizing, coordinating, and monitoring the care provided. They demonstrate advance knowledge and skills in the care of patients of Client units. The OR Coordinator delegates duties consistent with the scope of practice and function within the philosophy and overall plan of care at the Center. SUPERVISOR: Administrator SUPERVISES: Professional and Non-Professional staff assigned to all phases of OR DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Supervises and directs nursing care given to patients within the areas of responsibility: - Ensures OR care given to patients within the surgical site. - Delegates responsibility for immediate patient care to professional nursing staff in all areas of the OR. - Ensures availability of personnel, supplies and equipment required for the correct operation of the facility. - Applies policies and procedures of the facility to ensure consistent quality of nursing care. - Ensures delivery of patient care according to accepted nursing principles and current AORN standards. - Participates in the Quality Improvement process and activities including the areas of Safety, Infection Control, Patient Education/Teaching, Risk Management, and Documentation. - Adheres to guidelines for Cleaning/Decontamination and Patient Satisfaction. - Complies with OSHA, HIPAA, and other applicable Regulatory Standards and Risk Management Policies. Assists with Risk Management activities: i. Reports variances, participates with RCA process ii. Enforces PPE protocol iii. Enforces Time-out verification iv. Enforces sharps protocol Demonstrates competency in performing job tasks and in operating equipment. Cross covers in absence of Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator as needed. (See Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator Job Description) Provides a safe environment for patients and personnel. Supervises care of the OR areas and the equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility and operational ability at all times. Directs all safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or any injury to patient, personnel or equipment. Controls traffic to prevent infections. Ensures proper temperature, ventilation and lighting to provide a comfortable working environment. Assists physicians in operations through provision of adequate, qualified personnel. Formulates a schedule, which provides personnel available for all required patient care in the OR areas. Assures presence of professional personnel at all procedures. Plans assignments of personnel and delegates specific duties and tasks. Supervises and directs duties and jobs performed by staff personnel. Ensures that staff personnel possess clinical skills necessary to provide quality care to all patient age populations from pediatric to geriatric patients. Provides and controls materials, supplies and equipment needed for the successful operation of the responsible clinical areas. Consults with Material Manager regarding purchasing needed materials. Evaluates physicians’ needs with regard to supplies, instruments, and equipment. Observes use and handling of supplies to decrease mishandling or incorrect methods. Submits and reviews department budget requirements. Provides increased educational and technical opportunities for all staff members. Directs in-service education programs with regard to purpose, content and needs. Ensures staff attendance at in-services and other continuing education requirements and activities. Provides daily opportunities of challenge and learning for staff to increase knowledge, experience, and competency levels. Encourages staff toward self-improvement and educational advancement. Observes staff in daily duties with regard to practices and procedures, identifying areas of improvement and providing clinical coaching. Participates in clinical nursing and identifies trends for improving quality of patient care. Plans, controls, directs and coordinates all administrative duties for the proper functioning of the facility personnel. Determines facility policies in accordance with the site’s mission and philosophy. Formulates and periodically evaluates the facility philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures. Evaluates all aspects of policies, procedures, schedules, job descriptions, job performance measures and staff in-service education for best practices on an on-going basis. Completes evaluations and proficiency reports on professional personnel and supervises reports of others. Counsels employees as needed and makes recommendations for salary adjustments, promotion, disciplinary actions and termination. Evaluates budget and staffing requirements and submits revisions as needed. Attends various designated and associated committee meetings to ensure coordination of efforts. Reports changes of any type to the Clinical staff and submits reports of changes to the Facility Administrator. Executes clinical leadership for all survey and site audit requirements. Coordinates activities of the facility with contract personnel (i.e. laboratory, radiology, housekeeping, laundry, pharmacy). Reports on activities, policies and procedures in the OR areas. Attends designated meetings to ascertain needs, directions, and desires of contract personnel to coordinate and maintain continuity of patient care. Formulates policies and procedures in conjunction with contract personnel on related aspects of nursing care. Increases morale through the spirit of leadership and cooperation when working with all contract personnel. Retains accountability for all nursing care provided in all areas of responsibility. Constantly strives for growth and self-improvement. Leads by example through good use of judgment and communications with others. Coordinates activities and policies through the Medical Director and Administrator. Partners closely with the Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator Reports any/all types of concerns and/or challenges to the Administrator including but not limited to clinical incidents, physician and/or staff concerns, third-party/contract personnel issues, any other incident or trend bringing additional potential risk to the business operations. Participate in daily ongoing communications with Administrator and other members of the management team. Ensures the operational layout of all OR’s are functional for the following day cases. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES Communication – advanced level of clear and concise, verbally and written communications. Bilingual is preferred but not required. Interpersonal skills - establishes and maintains good working relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations. Able to work effectively with other employees, patients and external parties. PC skills - demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and others as required. Policies Procedures - demonstrates knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems. Analytical skills - knowledge of basic analytical skills to view and comprehend various reports. Management skills – ability to multi-task, delegate, coach, mentor and handle basic conflict resolution for employee relations. EDUCATION Graduate of accredited school of nursing as a Registered Nurse EXPERIENCE Minimum one (1) year in management position and minimum of three (3) years OR experience. CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: Maintains current professional license in the State of Florida Maintains certification in CPR, ACLS, and PALS and any other required specialty. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical – requires extensive mobility, walking and standing in supervising the clinical areas. Pushing, pulling, and lifting of equipment and / or patients. Lifting up to 50 lbs. Bending and kneeling at times. Requires mental alertness and accuracy for quality decision making. Must have physical stamina to work extra hours if needed. Environmental – Works in well-lit and ventilated areas with complicated equipment, some of which is hazardous in nature. May be exposed to patients who have communicable diseases, with proper techniques, this risk should be minimized. Must exercise caution to potential exposure to chemical vapors from cleaning substances.
